Bio
Dezhurov trained as a military pilot and engineer before selection to the cosmonaut group in 1987. His background placed him in the generation that carried Soviet station experience into post-Soviet international operations.
His first spaceflight launched on Soyuz TM-21 in March 1995 with Gennady Strekalov and Norman Thagard. Dezhurov commanded Mir EO-18, worked aboard Mir during the early Shuttle-Mir era, and returned to Earth on STS-71 after Atlantis made the first shuttle docking with Mir.
His second flight launched on STS-105 in August 2001 as part of 3. Dezhurov helped operate the young International Space Station, performed multiple EVAs, and returned on STS-108 after more than four months in orbit.
