Bio
Ōnishi was born in Nerima, Tokyo, and earned a degree in aeronautical and space engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1998. Before astronaut selection, he worked as a pilot for All Nippon Airways, bringing professional aviation experience into JAXA's astronaut corps.
JAXA selected Ōnishi in 2009. His first mission was Soyuz MS-01 in 2016 with Anatoli Ivanishin and Kathleen Rubins, serving aboard the ISS during 48/49. He returned to orbit on SpaceX Crew-10 in 2025 with Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers, and Kirill Peskov for Expedition 72/73 station work.
Ōnishi has not performed an , but his two completed station missions total 262 days, 18 hours, 51 minutes in space. Expedition labels are station increments inside his Soyuz and Crew Dragon flights, not separate launches.
