Sigmund Werner Paul Jahn
Sigmund Werner Paul Jahn was an East German military pilot, Intercosmos research cosmonaut, and the first German in space. His 1978 mission made him a major public figure in the German Democratic Republic and later a respected bridge between German and Russian space communities.

Bio
Jahn served in the National People's Army air force and trained as a pilot before selection for the Soviet-led Intercosmos program. He and backup Eberhard Kollner trained for the joint Soviet-East German mission to Salyut 6.
He launched aboard Soyuz 31 on August 26, 1978 with Valery Bykovsky, visited Salyut 6, and returned aboard Soyuz 29 on September 3, 1978. During the mission, he conducted scientific experiments and Earth-observation work under the Intercosmos program.
Soyuz 31 and Soyuz 29 are the launch and return vehicles for one short-duration Salyut 6 mission. Jahn's completed record is one spaceflight, no time, and 7 days, 20 hours, 49 minutes in space.
