Shannon Matilda Wells Lucid is a biochemist, NASA astronaut, long-duration Mir resident, and former NASA Chief Scientist. Became one of the defining American long-duration astronauts of the Shuttle-Mir era.

Before and around spaceflight, Shannon W.Before and around spaceflight, Lucid developed a technical foundation through study at University of Oklahoma. That background matters because the shuttle era depended on astronauts who could move between spacecraft operations, payload science, robotics, aviation, and public-facing international work.
Lucid flew on STS-51-G, STS-34, STS-43, STS-58, STS-76, Mir EO-21, STS-79 during the operational Space Shuttle era.
First American woman to live aboard Mir. Received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Set major United States and women's space-duration records in 1996.
