Altman served as a Navy pilot and test pilot before NASA, including flying work connected to the film Top Gun. At NASA he piloted STS-90 and STS-106 before moving into shuttle command.
He commanded STS-109 and STS-125, both Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions. STS-125 was the final Hubble servicing mission, extending the observatory's scientific life and becoming one of the last major standalone shuttle achievements before retirement of the fleet.
