Whitson studied biology and chemistry at Iowa Wesleyan College and earned a doctorate in biochemistry from Rice University. Her NASA career connected research science, long-duration ISS operations, EVA — open definition work, and senior astronaut leadership.

Her actual flight record is best counted by launch and return vehicles: STS-111 / STS-113 for Expedition — open definition 5, Soyuz TMA-11 for Expedition 16, Soyuz MS-03 / Soyuz MS-04 for Expeditions 50, 51, and 52, plus Axiom Mission 2 and Axiom Mission 4.

Whitson became the first woman to command the ISS, later Chief of the Astronaut Office, and continued flying commercially.
