Bio
Ivins studied aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder and worked at Johnson Space Center before astronaut selection. Her early NASA work included shuttle display systems, engineering, and crew procedures.
She flew STS-32, STS-46, STS-62, STS-81, and STS-98. Those missions covered satellite retrieval, tethered satellite testing, science payloads, Shuttle-Mir logistics, and early International assembly.
Ivins became known for extensive work with the shuttle Remote Manipulator System and for being part of the operational bridge between shuttle payload flights and station construction. Her missions span the pre-ISS, Shuttle-Mir, and early ISS eras.
