Bio
McBride trained as a naval aviator, flew combat missions, graduated from test pilot training, and built a deep aviation record before NASA selected him with Astronaut Group 8 in 1978.
He piloted STS-41-G in 1984, a mission that carried a large international crew, included major Earth-observation work, and featured the first American woman by Kathryn Sullivan.
McBride was assigned to command STS-61-E, the ASTRO-1 astronomy mission, but that flight was canceled after the Challenger accident. He later worked in NASA management and education outreach.
