Jerome Apt III
Jerome "Jay" Apt III is an American physicist, pilot, professor, and retired NASA astronaut. Selected in NASA Astronaut Group 11 in 1985, he flew four shuttle missions and later became a Carnegie Mellon University professor.

Bio
Apt worked as a scientist and NASA flight controller before astronaut selection, including planetary science and mission-control experience. That background made his shuttle career a mix of orbital operations, science payloads, and Earth-observation work.
He flew STS-37, STS-47, STS-59, and STS-79. His missions included deployment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, Spacelab-J, Space Radar Laboratory Earth science, and a Shuttle-Mir docking flight.
