James D. Van Hoften
James Dougal Adrianus van Hoften is an American engineer, former Navy pilot, and NASA astronaut selected with NASA Astronaut Group 8 in 1978. His career combines civil engineering, hydraulic research, aviation, and the early shuttle program's move into satellite servicing.

Bio
Before NASA, van Hoften trained as an engineer and served as a Navy pilot. That mix of flight operations and doctoral-level engineering made him useful in a shuttle era built around complex payloads, robotic operations, and repair work.
His first spaceflight was STS-41-C in 1984, which deployed the Long Duration Exposure Facility and repaired the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. He returned on STS-51-I in 1985, performing EVA work that helped repair and redeploy the Syncom IV-3 satellite.
Van Hoften's two missions sit in the period when NASA was proving the shuttle could do more than carry payloads. His EVA assignments helped demonstrate that astronauts could service, repair, and return satellites as part of normal orbital operations.
After NASA, he moved into engineering and business leadership. His astronaut career remains closely tied to the shuttle's early identity as an orbital work platform.
