Bio
Shonin trained as a military pilot before joining the early cosmonaut corps. His single spaceflight came during the complex three-spacecraft Soyuz 6, Soyuz 7, and Soyuz 8 mission sequence in 1969.
On Soyuz 6, Shonin commanded a two-person crew with Valeri Kubasov. The mission observed the attempted activities of Soyuz 7 and Soyuz 8 and tested welding experiments in orbit.
Although he flew only once, Shonin belongs to the first-generation Soviet cosmonaut story and the early effort to turn Soyuz into an operational rendezvous and engineering spacecraft.
