Bio
Manakov came from the Soviet Air Force, where he built the operational background expected of selected for long-duration station work. He joined the cosmonaut corps in 1985 and moved into flight assignments during the final Soviet years.
His first flight, Soyuz TM-10, carried him and Gennady Strekalov to Mir in 1990. The expedition lasted more than four months and included scientific work, station maintenance, and repair activity around the Kvant-2 module.
Manakov returned to Mir on Soyuz TM-16 in 1993 with Alexander Poleshchuk. That mission used an androgynous docking unit on the Kristall module and helped prepare procedures that later mattered for Shuttle-Mir dockings.
