NS-20 launched on March 31, 2022 aboard New Shepard, with Lai serving as Mission Astronaut.
New Shepard launches vertically from West Texas, carries its autonomous crew above the atmosphere, and returns the capsule under parachutes while the lands separately under power. Gary Lai therefore has 1 completed spaceflight; backup, training, canceled, and future assignments are excluded from that total. The mission connected Lai's professional experience with direct work aboard a crewed spacecraft and a completed flight assignment. The flight converted that professional background into direct experience of launch, weightlessness, Earth viewing, , and recovery.
