Tito trained as an aerospace engineer and worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory before building a career in finance through Wilshire Associates. That technical background made his privately funded flight more than a celebrity visit: he understood orbital mechanics, spacecraft operations, and the research setting he was entering.

He launched aboard Soyuz TM-32 with Talgat Musabayev and Yuri Baturin and returned on Soyuz TM-31 after roughly a week aboard the ISS. During the visit he carried out personal research, photography, and public outreach while the professional crew handled station operations.

Tito's flight was controversial inside NASA at the time, but it became a major precedent. Later private astronauts, commercial crew — open definition visitors, and dedicated private orbital missions all sit downstream from the policy and training questions his mission forced agencies to answer.
