Bio
Lazutkin studied mechanical engineering at the Moscow Aviation Institute and was selected as a cosmonaut in 1992. His first and only spaceflight placed him aboard Mir with Vasily Tsibliyev and later NASA astronaut Michael Foale.
During Mir EO-23, the station suffered a collision with the uncrewed Progress M-34 cargo craft. Lazutkin and Foale helped isolate the damaged Spektr module by cutting cables and sealing hatches.
He returned after more than 184 days in space. His mission is remembered for crew problem-solving under extreme pressure during the Progress collision emergency.
