Bio
Volkov entered aviation through the Soviet Air Force and became a test pilot before joining the cosmonaut corps. His career moved from Salyut station operations to the more complex Mir program.
He flew Soyuz T-14 to Salyut 7, then Soyuz TM-7 and Soyuz TM-13 to Mir. His 1991-1992 Mir mission spanned the breakup of the Soviet Union, with Volkov launching as a Soviet citizen and returning after the creation of the Russian Federation.
Volkov later served as of the cosmonaut group at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. His son Sergey Volkov became the first second-generation cosmonaut.
