Bio
Momand trained through Afghan and Soviet military aviation channels before entering the Interkosmos program. His flight placed Afghanistan inside the Soviet Mir program during the final years of the Cold War.
He launched on Soyuz TM-6, visited Mir during Mir EP-3, and returned aboard Soyuz TM-5 after a tense delayed sequence. The mission included Earth-observation and scientific work tied to Afghanistan.
After the civil war in Afghanistan, Momand settled in Germany. His spaceflight remains a major Afghan scientific and cultural milestone.
